Netflix Movies Take Home Two Oscars
This year Netflix received 24 nominations at this year’s Oscars, however, its films only ended up winning two awards.
Laura Dern won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for playing Nora, the flashy divorce attorney in “Marriage Story” – the only award “Marriage Story” had won from its six nominations.
“The Irishman” drew the short end of the stick as it had not won any awards, despite being nominated in 10 different categories. Both films were nominated for Best Director and Best Picture, however that award ultimately went to the night’s big winner “Parasite.”
The other Oscar award Netflix had won was for “American Factory,” which had won the award for the Best Documentary Feature. This film was the first to emerge from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production deal with Netflix and despite the rumours, the Obamas were not on-hand to accept the award.
Netflix’s “Roma” won the awards for cinematography, foreign language film and director in the Oscars 2019. It is important to mention that a foreign language film had never won an Oscar aware until the Oscars 2020 when “Parasite” conquered and emerged victorious.
“The Irishman” seemed like Netflix’s biggest swing as it was made of a reported budget of $160 million, directed by Martin Scorsese, and it brought Al Pacino and Robert De Niro back together on-screen. In the end Netflix won some and lost some as they say, “All’s fair in love and war.”
