Using filters probably won’t get you likes o rather increase the number of likes… want to know why? We have come across a report that analyse what the whole jazz is about on photo-video-sharing-platform-Instagram.
I mean obviously people would rather double tap on a raw, original and unfiltered picture, maybe a photo related to your job or hobbies. Maybe even a #nomakeup selfie or even a #nofilter selfie of a full face of glam to show off your art of apply makeup. Or just a selfie of you post a work out motivating others to #sweatitout.
Making it personal can surly help viewers relate to your content and increase you’re like counts. Being said that it’s not all that bad to see how you look with dog ears, gothic makeup or even how you look in different glasses or masks… But researches think otherwise.
According to a report conducted by representatives from Rowan University, Wayne State University, University of Missouri, and University of Illinois, researches came up with a few statements:
“Researchers found that using photo filters in selfies results in fewer likes received, on average, than selfies posted without filters.”
“While selfie takers may regard photo filters to be increasing the visual attractiveness of themselves, this can be perceived by other users as an in genuine behaviour because it reflects the intent to only present the ideal depiction of self.
“The number of likes was lower for selfies posted with filters such as stickers or excessive use of colour filter compared to selfies without such filter”
Researchers analysed around 2,000 images, with the engagement rates on each post measured against a range of variables, including how many likes each individual would normally see on their posts in order to come up with the statements above.
It’s interesting to see how far this response extends, anyone who regularly uses Instagram, or any app where users post selfies would know, many of these images, even those without AR masks, are highly edited, sometimes transforming an individuals’ face beyond.
Regardless of this information there’s two sides to each type of image which contradicts the research above, wherein an image with filters will still grab attention and create a trends and a raw original image can sometime backlash or negative comments.
I mean if you post a video like the one below, you are surely going to grab attention.

According to Social Media Today “If users respond less positively to filter selfies, it would be interesting to see if they’re also less likely to like these types of updates – and whether that, in turn, might reduce the impetus for users to post such heavily edited photos.”
There’s a double-sided impact here, users edit their photos like this in order to give themselves a self-esteem boost but the concern lies the extended impacts of such, both on the posters themselves and the viewers of these images.
Posting selfies with AR masks, won’t get you Likes as you would expect
