Digital media has given millions, if not billions, of people the chance to be able to follow their passion and share it with others. For example, those who may have wanted to follow their love for football but never made it onto a team, could showcase their talent on Instagram reels or TikTok and get noticed on the platform, appreciated for their work. A foodie/cook may love to open their own restaurant but may not have the resources and therefore turn to social media to share their love for the activity. There are so many benefits of these video platforms allowing people to connect with others, educate others on their niche, and give people a hobby to share creative content.
Since the start of Covid-19, the social media platform TikTok had a rise in downloads. According to an analysis by Airnow Data, TikTok downloads in the month of March 2020 were 76 million, and 44.6 million in August. Not only did this symbolise strong competition for other apps such as Instagram and more specifically YouTube, but it also opened up the opportunity for influencers, content creators, and the world to produce short-form, engaging video content.
One person who used the platform as a way of showing his talented work is Jona Daniel. Known as @thisisjonadaniel, he has 12 videos on his page reaching 12.5 million views altogether and 581.3K followers. Jona has a genius way of putting together fake brand ads that make you want to buy the product and look better than the original ads.

It is not just the end video that is incredible, but the way he puts the whole TikTok video together. Firstly, Jona puts short clips together or he makes the advertisement which looks basic. He also uses a backing track on the clips that sound playful and childlike, giving more of the effect of the simple video, where we won’t expect an amazing outcome. Once it transitions into the main edit, we see completely different feels – Jona makes us use all our 5 senses to feel the product, smell the product, and want the product.

In the comments section, more of his fans and followers request for him to make different ads for random products. The latest video that he put together was for Scrub Daddy after seeing a comment on his previous video saying ‘You do sponges?????” with a side-eye emoji. With everyone sitting at the edge of their seat imaging what unique content he would create with a sponge, the results exceeded expectations.

According to Jona’s TikTok bio, he will be creating a YouTube page soon for longer content, and potentially paid work.
