Claire Saffitz quits Bon Appetit: “I’m Going To Do My Own Thing”

Pastry Chef and one of Bon Appetit’s biggest stars, Claire Suffitz has announced that she will no longer be working with the magazine. Claire revealed on Instagram that her contract with Bon Appetit publisher Conde Nast had ended earlier in May and after several months of thoughtful consideration, she has finalized the decision to part ways with the company.

Claire truly became an internet sensation with her journey as the host of an entertaining series “Gourmet Makes” on Bon Appetit’s official YouTube channel. As Claire attempted to recreate Gourmet versions of common snacks including ramen, candy, oreos, donuts and much more, she also managed to steal hearts and keep her audience interested with her adorable personality.

With recent events and general observation, this decision played out after Bon Appetit’s digital talent Sohla El-Waylly and several others made the similar decision to bring a halt to their journey due to disagreements in contract negotiations and the systematic racism in the working environment as well as the fact that the BIPOC staff weren’t paid equally or even barely paid for their appearance in multiple videos.

In light of her recent announcement, Claire remains hopeful that Bon Appetit will encounter a positive shift in the coming future. “Bon Appetit’s new leadership, coupled with the incredible hard work and dedication of the staff, make me confident that it will be a more equitable, inclusive, and dynamic place in the future”, Claire expressed.

This video, brought to you by the ever talented @vincentcross with editing help from @sauerproductions, is a behind-the-scenes look at the photoshoot we did last January for my forthcoming cookbook, Dessert Person. We are a world away now, but it's comforting to look back on that exhilarating and exhausting time, and to admire the work of @heysueli, @yungbludlau, @astrid_chastka, and many others. I have taken a break from online life recently and focused like so many of us on how to live healthfully and responsibly amidst so many challenges. I have invested and reinvested in relationships and spent a lot of time thinking about how I want the future to look professionally and personally. (To that end, I also got married!) I'm so grateful to have on the horizon the debut of Dessert Person — into which I and so many people poured so much love and energy — on October 20th. The team at Clarkson Potter and I put together a digital booklet of bonus recipes that for some reason or another did not make it into the book, but are no less beloved and delicious. For those who pre-order the book, you can get the booklet by clicking the link in bio. (You’ll be receiving a PDF, so desktop/laptop is best!) I hope you enjoy it, and happy baking.

Earlier in June, the talented chef expressed how she “didn’t do enough to call out the toxic workplace environment”. Later, Saffitz returned to Instagram on September to promote the launch of her cookbook ‘Dessert Person’ due on October 20th.
