Google reveals three new photography apps

We know, we know. There are a ton of photo-editing apps out there on the market.

But we’re rather intrigued by the recent launch of Google Research’s three new photography-based mobile apps.

These new apps are the first in an ongoing series of what Google calls photography ‘appsperiments’, which it defines as “usable and useful mobile photography experiences built on experimental technology.’’

Get ready to play around with Selfissimo!, Scrubbies, and Storyboard.

Aspiring models will thoroughly enjoy Selfissimo!

This black-and-white selfie app is your own private photoshoot inside your smartphone, complete with camera “flashes” and encouraging words from a “photographer.”

Every time you move, the app will snap a picture of you – just as if you were on set.

The “photographer” will occasionally send you messages “Strike a Pose!”, “Hot!” or “You’re magical!”. At the end of your “photoshoot” Selfissimo! will present you will a contact sheet of images you can share as a collection or individually.

Scrubbies lets its users create video loops from the most interesting bits of their video clips.

Scrubbies works by letting its users swipe left and right on a video clip, with one finger to play the video and two fingers to capture playback (so users can save it). Think Boomerang, but users have more control over the motion within the clip.

Unfortunately, a user can only create a “Scrubbie” from video footage shot within the app. It’s not possible to upload footage from an iPhone’s camera roll.

Storyboard is the app for comic book fanatics.

This app takes existing video clips from a user’s smartphone and styles them into a comic-book layout.

Interesting, isn’t it?

The downside is users can’t edit the results, but a single downward swipe on the screen will generate a new comic strip.

Don’t like your comic strip? Keep swiping down until the app produces one you like.

At the present moment, only Selfissimo! is available on both iOS and Android.

Scrubbies is only available on iOS, and Storyboard is exclusively for Android users.

Overall all three photography-apps seem like fun additions to your smartphone, especially if you enjoy playing around with photo-editing apps.

But they’re very gimmicky and not a necessity for influencers that take their imagery seriously.

What are your thoughts? Would you try any of these apps out? Let us know in the comments below…
