Huda Kattan spoke out against racial discrimination and hate crime targeted at the Asian community in the U.S. on Instagram earlier this week. The American – Iraqi influencer shared a series of Instagram stories with the hashtag #StopAsianHate on Huda Beauty’s main Instagram account:
“At Huda beauty, we stand against racism of any kind. Today we want to draw attention to the violent hate crimes against the Asian community that have increased dramatically since the pandemic began”.
She also shared a video posted by Michelle Lee, Editor-in-chief of Allure. The one-minute video clip shows some disturbing visuals of violence and torture faced by the Asian community.
In the video, Lee reports: “Hate crimes against the Asian-Americans are on a disturbing rise. Racism always existed but now the pandemic has given people an excuse to act on it”.Â
According to USA Today, these hate crimes and acts of discrimination are the direct result of Asians being blamed for the spread of the Coronavirus – which originated in Wuhan, China. Discriminatory statements made my key political figures – such as referring to the virus as the ‘China Virus’ or ‘Kung Flu’ – have also fueled the stigma surrounding Asian Americans.
Huda Kattan is known for being very vocal on social media about racial discrimination . The beauty mogul has notably expressed her solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter movement by donating $500K to the The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People [NAACP] and participating in #BlackoutTuesday – where social media users posted black squares on their feeds and refrained from posting content in support of Black rights – on both her personal and business account.
Additionally, as part of Black History Month, Huda shared her favorite Black content creators on Instagram and urged her 48 Million followers to tag their favorite Black influencers.
