Discord releases ‘Stage Channels’ feature to compete with audio-app Clubhouse

Clubhouse seems to be the ‘it’ platform that every social media app is trying to copy – with Discord being the latest company joining the competition.

Discord is a voice, video, and text communication app that provides a platform for people to talk and hang out with their friends and communities: whether it’s a topic specific discussion group or a karaoke night between friends, Discord provides the perfect virtual space to meet . However – Clubhouse – whose become massively popular due to their audio-only discussion rooms – has caused Discord to release some competitive features: Discord announced the rollout of the ‘Stage Channels’ feature – which will allow users to create and join audio channels with up to 1000 unique users – on Twitter and Instagram . This feature will be compatible across all devices – including iOS, Android, Windows, and MacOS.

Moreover, ‘Stage Channels’ will allow people to virtually hold large, audio-only events and conferences that will be accessible to a wide group of people –  further helping Discord to effectively position itself against competitor Clubhouse.

So – how can you try it out?

At the moment, the ‘Stage channels’ feature is only accessible to Community Servers – or users who run a community on the platform. This ensures that channels are only created by verified users who follow community guidelines and create content according to Discord rules.

After becoming a Community Server account, you can navigate to the “+” button on the channel list or go to the Server Settings menu to ‘Create channel’ and then click on ‘Stage channel’ to set up roles – such as stage moderator and speakers – for your Stage channel.

The ‘Stage Channel’ feature will also provide a variety of moderator controls that will allow members to speak during a virtual event. Similar to Clubhouse and Zoom, Discord’s ‘Stage Channel’ will allow users to raise their hand if they want to share their thoughts or leave the group without interrupting the conversation.

Discord also revealed that the maximum number of users that can attend a single ‘Stage Channel’ – which is currently 1000 – will be extended in the coming months.
