In celebration of International Girls in ICT Day, ITP Live would like to spotlight UN Women’s efforts to economically empower young women by helping them leverage career opportunities in the ICT sector.
A month prior, ITP Live partnered with UN Women to host the ITP Live 2021 Conference – the Power of Female Influence – which invited top female content creators in MENA and in the USA to speak about their careers and to highlight the successes and challenges they’ve encountered along the way. This partnership was formed to inspire young females who want to pursue careers in social media and content creation.
Susanne Mikhail Eldhagen – Regional Director of UN Women Arab States – featured as a keynote speaker during the conference: she delivers a powerful keynote speech on the importance of gender equality and why content needs women – which can be viewed on the ITP Live YouTube channel from April 29.
In the months prior and following, UN Women launched important projects to aid young females – particularly female refugees – in the MENA region. Here are some of their most inspiring programs and initiatives across the Middle East:
UN Women Jordan
In partnership with Arabic HeforShe youth, UN women has developed a mobile game application called WeRise: fully designed by Jordanian youth, the app aims to help youth build knowledge and awareness on key gender issues and social norms through educational games, challenges, and quizzes.
So far, the app has reached over 2,000 young Jordanians – with more surely to come. The WeRise app can be downloaded for free on both Android and IOS.
Moreover, UN Women partnered with ReBootKamp [RBK] to enroll 75 young Jordanian females in two back-to-back boot camps – where they were given the opportunity to enhance their knowledge on software engineering, javascript, and coding as well as on leadership, communication, and other soft employment skills.
At the end of this initiative, 95% of the female graduates were employed – an amazing feat given the sinking job placement rate due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
UN Women Lebanon
UN Women has launched an initiative to empower Lebanese women within marginalized refugee and host communities by giving them increased access to career opportunities within the ICT sector.
The project will help empower 110 women in Lebanon by equipping them with in-demand, market-based ICT skills and providing them with paid part-time or full-time job training / apprenticeship opportunities.
The curriculum will focus on topics such as digital literacy, basic coding, web-development, social media, and online management.

This project by UN Women will not only offer the opportunity for Lebanese women to obtain better career opportunities, but will also help increase societal acceptance of women working in non-traditional sectors such as sewing, beauty, and hairdressing.
In short – UN Women is doing some incredible work in helping women in marginalized communities get better access to opportunities in the ICT.
