Elon Musk’s Ex Invests 50% Of Her Revenue Into Artists

Artists can now get 50% of Grime’s royalties, here how

Elon Musk's Ex-Grimes Invests 50% Of Her Revenue Into Artists

Musicians who create songs with Grimes’ voice using Artificial Intelligence will split 50% of royalties on any successful tracks that include her voice.

Using her real name, Claire Boucher, the Canadian singer tweeted that it was the same as collaborating with any artist. Feel free to use my voice without penalty,” she tweeted.

She said she wanted to be a “guinea pig” and likes the idea of open-sourcing all art and getting rid of copyright”.

Music Industry VS AI

Currently, the music industry is facing unprecedented challenges in keeping up with the implications of songs created by training AI to generate artists’ voices. Universal Music petitioned TikTok, YouTube, and Spotify last week to remove a track titled Heart On My Sleeve that used AI vocals generated from Drake and the Weeknd.

A few tracks released recently featured AI-generated vocals based on Drake, who seems less enthusiastic than Grimes. “This is the final straw AI,” the rapper wrote on an Instagram story, referring to a version of Ice Spice’s song Munch with a fake verse written by him.

The label issued a statement in which it claimed that “the training of generative AI using our artists’ music” was “a violation of copyright law”. However, Universal’s position hasn’t been put to the test in court, and it’s still unclear whether human-made art that incorporates AI can be protected by copyright.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) issued a warning in October that AI businesses were routinely infringing on copyrights by utilizing music to train their machines.

The US Copyright Office, however, determined last month that AI-generated art, including music, cannot be protected by copyrights because it is “not the product of human authorship.”

Grimes’s Experiment

Grimes stated on Twitter that she is developing software “that should simulate my voice well” but would also be open to the idea of sharing vocal tracks for people to use to train AI.

In response to a question about what she would do if somebody used her voice to produce racist or violent content, she stated that she “may do copyright takedowns ONLY for rly rly toxic lyrics” or songs that were “anti-abortion or [something] like that”.

“That’s the only rule… [I] don’t wanna be responsible for a Nazi anthem unless it’s somehow in jest, a la Producers, I guess,” she declared.

Grimes, who shares two kids with Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter and the founder of SpaceX, has examined the problems that AI poses in songs like “Flesh Without Blood.” She worked with the music label Endel in 2020 to produce an AI-generated lullaby for her baby X A-12.

She remarked, “I think AI is great,” to the New York Times. In terms of creativity, I believe AI can take the place of people. Therefore, I believe that as a species, we should eventually discuss how much AI will influence the arts.
