New data suggests that Twitter Blue’s difficulties since its launch almost six months ago are worse than previously thought. According to a report from Mashable earlier this week, Twitter has only been able to convert about 640,000 Twitter users into paying Twitter Blue subscribers since Musk’s version of the subscription service launched last November.

Even though those figures are disappointing, an even more telling aspect of Twitter Blue is how many of its original subscribers have canceled their subscriptions. As of April 30, only about 68,157 of Twitter Blue’s initial 150 000 subscribers have persisted and kept a paid subscription. Monthly fees range from $8 to $11 on mobile.
The total number of early subscriber figures is directly related to internal documents leaked to the Washington Post last year, which revealed that within a few days of Twitter Blue‘s launch in November, 150,000 users had already signed up. Shortly after those users subscribed, Twitter temporarily disabled new signups for about a month due to accounts signing up for Blue with the intention of impersonating major brands on the platform.
This indicates that about 81,843 users, or 54.5 percent, of Twitter users who initially signed up for Twitter Blue in November, are no longer using the service.
The information has a few addendums. Not all of the 68,157 users who have subscribed to Twitter Blue since November have kept their subscriptions active for the entire time. It’s possible that some of those users had at one point canceled or let their subscription expire before coming back.
It’s also possible that some of the users who appear to be subscribed have already canceled their plans and are still getting Twitter Blue’s subscription service for nothing. This was mentioned by Former Twitter Blue subscribers who just can’t get rid of their subscription, blue checkmark and all, even though they canceled and haven’t paid for months, which were the subject of previous reporting by journalist Steven Monacelli for Gizmodo.
