Sex and the City’s new chapter will live on HBO Max instead of its original home at HBO

A Sex And The City Revival Is Set To Roll On HBO Max—But Without Lead Kim Cattrall

The news of the Sex and the City reboot was announced on Sunday, when Sarah took to Instagram to share a teaser clip for the new series, which is called And Just Like That…

It will follow “Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.

Filming on the revival is expected to begin in late spring 2021—in New York, of course.

I grew up with these characters, and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humor and the beloved city that has always defined them,” Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max, said in a statement, per Deadline.

The continuation of Sex and the City will arrive without one of its key cast members. After Cattrall made several public comments that suggested she would never do a third SATC film, her role as Samantha was apparently scrapped from the project. Parker responded to a series of Instagram comments asking about Samantha’s role in the revival. In one comment, Parker clarified that she didn’t “dislike” Cattrall and that she would be missed. “Samantha isnt part of this story,” Parker wrote, adding, “But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do.”

Cattrall told The Guardian in 2019 that she’d be open to them recasting her role. “It was a blessing in so many ways but after the second movie I’d had enough,” she told the outlet. “I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t just replace me with another actress instead of wasting time bullying. No means no.” During the interview, Cattrall definitively stated, “I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself.”

It’s unclear which additional cast members have signed on for the revival, including the trio’s love interests—Chris Noth as Mr. Big, David Eigenberg as Steve, and Evan Handler as Harry.

Kim Cattrall a few days ago threw some thinly-disguised shade at her former Sex and the City castmates by ‘liking’ a fan tweet that ‘applauded’ her decision to ‘put herself first’ and refuse to take part in the upcoming reboot of the HBO show.

Kim, 64, has yet to make a public statement about the news of the series’ revival, but she made her feelings about it perfectly clear with her reaction to the tweet, which praised the star for ‘doing what is best for her.

The tweet read: ‘I absolutely love Sex and the City and whilst I am saddened that Samantha will not return, I applaud doing what is best for you and think this is great example of putting yourself first. Well done @KimCattrall.’

The rumors plagued the four women throughout much of their time filming – however each of the actresses shut down speculation of a rift time and time again.

Since walking away from the role of Samantha once and for all however, Kim has been much more open about the fact that she was ‘never really friends’ with any of her former castmates.

She also hit out at Sarah, insisting that she ‘could have been nicer’ about Kim’s decision not to continue taking part in the popular franchise.

Thus far, those involved in the Sex and the City reboot have remained mum about how it will address Samantha’s absence, refusing to confirm whether the role will be re-cast, or whether she will be written out of the script altogether.

When one Instagram commenter suggested Jennifer Coolidge be cast as Samantha, Sarah wrote vaguely: ‘We have some new stories to tell. We are excited.’

She clarified in another comment: ‘No, I don’t dislike [Samantha/Kim]. I’ve never said that. Never would. Samantha isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do. X.’

She also expressed her regard for Kim as when another commenter wrote they ‘will miss Kim/Samantha,’ Sarah Jessica replied: ‘We will too. We loved her so.’

It is reported that Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristen Davis are each set to make $1 million per episode for the upcoming HBO Max limited series. And with 10 episodes in the works, that means each star could be making $10 million for the whole project. HBO and the actresses’ reps haven’t confirmed the news, though Variety sites multiple sources for the data.

Parker, Nixon, and Davis are set to reprise their roles as Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York, respectively, as well as executive produce the show. Titled And Just Like That…, the reboot will follow the leading trio as they navigate life, love, and friendships in their 50s. Kim Cattrall, AKA Samantha Jones, is sadly not returning.
