Youtube calls it quits for 2020 as it announced that there would be no "Youtube Rewind" this year

Youtube announced on Twitter earlier that the platform will not release “Youtube Rewind” for 2020. As a nod to a tumultuous year, even Youtube seems to hesitate with the idea of revisiting the events. Youtube Rewind encompasses a video recap of all the significant events and trends of that particular year, featuring popular creators. The series started in 2010 and has released a video consecutively every year until 2020.

YouTube explained their decision on Twitter saying, “Whether you love it — or only remember 2018 — Rewind was always meant to be a celebration of you.” The 2018 reference is a call back to that specific rewind being tagged as the most-disliked video garnering 18 million dislikes. YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind never featured any of its prominent creators and included outdated trends that led to a lot of criticism.

Youtube further explains how 2020 has been quite an unusual year as they feel that it does not feel appropriate for them to produce Rewind. The platform does credit that despite everything, several significant events were good this year. Praising the efforts of many who lifted spirits helped others cope and even made a difficult year for many rather better.
