On January 5th, PBS announced that the children’s show ‘Caillou’ will end after 20 years on the air. The broadcasting service tweeted:
“We’re saying farewell to @cailloudhx, but remember, when we say goodbye to something…” Tuesday’s tweet read. “… It just means we get to say hello to something new!”
The show began in Canada and has been in America since the year 2000. Reactions to the show’s cancellation have been mixed. With some are nostalgic about the discontinuation of the show, some parents are relieved that the show has come to an end.
Years ago there was actually a change.org petition aiming to get the children’s show taken off the air. Started by American mum Kate McKenzie, she wrote:
“Caillou is a whiny, bratty child, and his show holds no educational value. Children who watch this program tend to copy Caillou’s behavior. Whining, demanding, throwing himself on the floor kicking and screaming…” McKenzie wrote at the time. “How is this teaching our children good values and communication skills?”
Nonetheless, there will likely be many kids who are disappointed to see Caillou go. For that reason, PBS shared tips on how parents can cheer up their children when their favourite show ends.
