Snapchat is reportedly working on augmented reality spectacles which will help users tap into the world of AR without needing to use their phones. Snapchat plans to officially announce their AR spectacles to the public this May 2021.
In an article published by the Information, it was revealed that the new AR glasses are aimed at creators and developers – and not for use by the general consumer market:
“Unlike past models of Snap’s smart glasses though, this version of the product is not meant for the consumer market but is instead aimed at developers and creators. Those groups are already the creative force behind many of the wildly popular AR effects on the Snapchat app for mobile phones, known as lenses. Snap likely hopes the developers will come up with software experiences that can work on the new device, which could be offered to a wider group of customers at some point in the future”.
Moreover, the report revealed that Snap Inc is also in the works of building their very own drone after making a recent $20 million investment in Zero Zero Robotics and acquiring the drone company Ctrl Me Robotics in 2017.
Snapchat is not the first social media platform who has explored different ways to use AR: in early March, Facebook revealed their plans to bring AR technology glasses to the market within the next 10 years.
It seems like there may be some stiff competition amongst the big social media players: whose AR glasses would you buy? Let us know in the comments!
