American YouTuber Rebecca Black has released her latest single ‘Personal’ on April 23. The single is Black’s third song release in 2021. Earlier this year, Black released her single ‘Girlfriend’ and a remix of her viral song ‘Friday’ – which featured 3OH!3, Big Freedia and Dorian Electra to celebrate the song’s 10-year anniversary.
The YouTuber has come a long way: Black first rose to fame at age 13 for her infamous single ‘Friday’ – which was called the “worst song ever” by critics. After releasing the song on YouTube, Black became a victim of wide-spread bullying and death threats. Despite this, she shared how it was always important for her to be her true self – which helped her overcome the negative criticism:
“I think what I hope to see — and I do see this happening, so I feel hopeful — is that in this search for validation, we do it through our individuality and the thing that makes us us rather than trying to be the person that we think people want us to be. I have spent so much time being the person I thought people wanted me to be, and during every single moment I was undoubtedly miserable. So I hope that if kids go for it, they at least do it in a way that actually makes them happy and fulfilled”.
Black revealed that her latest post-breakup anthem ‘Personal’ is about emotional breakups and how to come to terms with them:
“Personal’ represents this reckoning with a consequence of heartbreak I hadn’t really ever understood, which was the guilt and heaviness that comes with being the one to put an end to a relationship when that is not what the other person wants. I’ve learned you can’t really stop two people on roads heading in opposite directions, and it can feel so difficult to consciously make a decision that you know will hurt someone you love, while at the same time knowing it’s the necessary choice for yourself at the end of the day”.
