On May 20, Twitter announced that it will be re-launching profile verifications – which adds a tiny blue checkmark next to a Twitter user’s username. Moreover, Twitter stated that they would be welcoming public applications for Twitter verification in the coming weeks.
In November 2017, Twitter stopped accepting applications for public verifications after reported chaos and misuse of Twitter verification badges. After 3+ years, Twitter has confirmed that their verification program is making a long-awaited comeback in early 2021 after officially updating their policy guidelines.
Dear “can you verify me” ––
Save your Tweets and DMs, there’s a new official way to apply for a blue badge, rolling out over the next few weeks.
You can now submit an application to request verification in-app, right from your account settings!

To be eligible to apply, Twitter requires user profiles to contain a profile name, profile image and a confirmed email address or phone number. The account also needs to have been active for the past six months and have followed all Twitter rules and guidelines. Accounts such as parody, newsfeed, commentary and unofficial fan accounts will not be verified:
If you meet the above requirements, follow the steps below to get verified on Twitter:
- Navigate to ‘Accounts Settings’ on Twitter
- Tap on the ‘New Verification Application’ button
- Choose the category that represents you the most i.e. [Government], [Companies, brands, & organizations], [News organizations & journalists], [Entertainment], [Sports & gaming], [Activists, organizers, & other influential individuals]
- Verify your identity using either a Government issued ID, an official email ID or an official website.
After submitting the ‘New Verification Application’, Twitter will get back to users within a few business days, depending on the number of applications. If an application is approved, the changes will go into immediate effect – with the blue tick mark automatically appearing on a user’s profile; however, if it is rejected, a user will only be able to reapply after 30 days.
