Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, has made the difficult decision to leave the club after playing for them for 16 years.
Ramos joined Real Madrid in 2005 and has since won four Champions League trophies and five La Liga titles with the club.
Rumours have been circulating for a while regarding Ramos’ place in Real Madrid. In May 2019, Ramos said that he “would play for Madrid for free” but he had wanted a new two-year deal on his same €15m salary (minus a 10% reduction applied across the squad because of the coronavirus crisis).
Instead, Real Madrid only offered one year and signed David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. Ultimately, Ramos decided not to continue his time at Real Madrid. The 35-year-old defender’s contract will expire at the end of June.
Nonetheless, Ramos has achieved immense success during his time with Real, making 671 appearances, scoring 101 goals.
A statement from the club read: “Real Madrid announces that tomorrow, Thursday 17 June, at 12:30 pm, an act of tribute and farewell to our captain Sergio Ramos will be held, which will be attended by our president Florentino Perez.”
