In today’s world of hyper-media, if you say you do not use Instagram, you are most likely living under a rock or it is taken for granted you’re on a social media detox due to overuse of it. Especially Instagram – it has slowly and comfortably creeped into our daily lives and found its place within our 24-hour schedule. No matter how ‘busy’ you are, you will still find time to scroll through it at least once a day.
Then why is the MET Gala so exclusive?
Shouldn’t everyone be snapping like – even the walls of it? Their no-phone policy is well-known to most. Why have we not yet seen what the hall looks like or the pre-fittings look like? Not knowing makes us want to be there even more! This social experiment is a common tactic used by many brands and in many ‘exclusive’ high-profile parties across the globe.
The Met Gala was established in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a way to raise money for the newly-founded Costume Institute. Accordingly, the attendees of the early galas were almost entirely members of New York high society or the city’s fashion industry. This event is the fashion world’s biggest event and will no doubt be buzzing on every single phone.
What happens inside the party?
It’s a secret! For the last three years, posting on social media has been banned on the red carpet. In 2017, Kylie Jenner (Instagram queen) had broken this rule and managed to capture a selfie that is often called the ‘Billion dollar selfie’ because of all the high-profile celebrities in one frame. This was trending all over Instagram. What we can dig and tell you is – There is a line inside with the hosts, and guests have to file a security check and air kiss them. Then guests tour the exhibition on their way to the cocktail party to experience some culture.
Where can you watch it this year?
Vogue is hosting a livestream of the event, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Sept. 13. Gen-Z superstars Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman will serve as hosts, while Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour comprise the evening’s honorary chairs. The two will interview guests as they arrive on the gala’s red carpet. You can catch the livestream by going to Vogue’s Twitter account.
