Singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran was accused of copying Marvin Gaye’s 1970s classic tune “Let’s Get It On” when he produced his hit song “Thinking Out Loud.”
The Verdict
After much deliberation on the severity of the copyrighting issue, it was announced that Ed Sheeran had won the case. On Thursday, the jury concluded that he did not steal key components, and with a sigh of relief, Ed Sheeran was reported to have covered his face with his hands before hugging his lawyer with gratitude.
Although it was argued the songs had many similarities, Sheeran sat with his legal team to justify the differences between the songs and argued all the trial was a threat to all musicians who were to create their own music.
Grammy-Winning Artist
The Britsh Artist has won four Grammys for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Shape of You” and Best Pop Vocal Album for “÷”. Sheeran has also been recognized with several Brit Awards, including British Album of the Year for “+”, British Male Solo Artist, and British Single of the Year for “Shape of You”. He has won Ivor Novello Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, and Billboard Music Awards, among others. Sheeran’s contributions to music have been widely recognized, and he has cemented his place as one of the most successful and talented artists of his generation.
Comments From Sheeran
When commenting on the case, Ed Sheeran responded by saying, “I am obviously very happy with the outcome of the case, and it looks like I’m not going to have to retire from my day job after all,” he said, referencing his previous comment that he would quit playing music if he lost, in a statement obtained by the news outlet. “But, at the same time, I am unbelievably frustrated that baseless claims like this are allowed to go to court at all.”Â
