Egyptian Actress Amira El-Sayed Gets Her Big Break with HBO’s ‘Spy/Master’

Amira El-Sayed, an Egyptian-Austrian actress, and author, has been cast in the upcoming HBO series “Spy/Master.” The Cold War-era show, which will debut on May 19th, follows the exploits of a secret agent in Romania and West Germany in the 1970s.

HBO’s ‘Spy/Master’

Five of the six episodes of the series will feature El Sayed. Adina Sădeanu and Kirsten Peter wrote and directed “Spy/Master” for HBO Romania, and its first two episodes have already won the Berlinale Series Award (2023).

According to the Spy/Master brief, the series follows “Victor Godeanu, Ceausescu’s right-hand man, who has a secret. He is also a KGB agent and must escape before he is discovered, so he will seize a valuable diplomatic opportunity.”

The actress based in Germany was born in Alexandria and was brought up speaking both Arabic and German. Amira has starred in many international productions, amongst them her first international film A Hologram for the King, starring Tom Hanks and directed by Tom Tykwer. Amira also enjoys writing and is the author of Klang der Freiheit (Sound of freedom), a book on the political developments in Egypt, published in 2014 by Letter P.
