Interview with henna artist Saman

Henna, also known as mehndi, is made from a reddish-brown dye that has been mixed from powdered leaves and used to decorate the body. Specialising in traditional Indian mehndi, we speak with henna artist Saman who is based in Dubai about how to find the right henna artist for your special occasion and some tips to follow when the henna is applied.

What inspired you to become a henna artist?

I have always been fascinated by the intricate beauty of henna designs. Having grown up in a culture where henna plays an important role in festivals and rituals, I was drawn to its artistry. I thought it was very interesting to watch a skilled henna artist create stunning patterns. When I started experimenting with henna myself, I realized that it enriches the joy and special moments it brings to people. This inspired me to pursue a career as a henna artist where I could share my passion for this ancient art form with others.

How has social media helped with your work? What is your favourite social media platform & why?

Social media has helped me expand my henna art and is helpful for my work. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest have allowed me to showcase my portfolio to a global audience, connect with clients, share tutorials, and find inspiration from other artists. My favorite platform is Instagram. This is because we focus on visuals and support the henna community. This has allowed me to reach a wide and passionate audience, grow as an artist, and gain clients who appreciate my work.

What are some of the most challenging bridal henna designs that you have created?

Bridal henna designs often include intricate patterns and customizations. One of the most sophisticated designs I have ever designed is a full-length bridal henna on the arms and legs, taking into account the bride’s specific wishes and theme. These designs require precision and attention to detail to ensure the henna stays vibrant throughout your wedding celebration.

What is the weirdest request you have gotten as a henna artist?

One of the most unusual requests I received was to incorporate tiny images of the bride and groom’s favorite cartoon characters into their henna design. While it was unconventional, it was a fun challenge to fuse these characters into a traditional henna pattern, and the couple loved the result.

Have you done henna art on any celebrities or other influencers?

Yes, I’ve had the honor of working with several celebrities and influencers for special events and photoshoots. While I respect their privacy, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to their beauty transformations using henna artistry.
