Roblox releases new AI feature

At the Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) 2023, Roblox announced a new conversational AI assistant that will have the ability to help creators make experiences for the popular social app more easily.

The new AI assistant, known as the Roblox Assistant, builds on previous features that allows creators to build virtual assets and write code with the help of generative AI. This means that users have to type in prompts to do things, such as, generate virtual environments.

In one demo, somebody types in “I want to make a game set in ancient ruins,” and the AI drops in some stones, moss-covered columns, and broken architecture. More prompts will create more detailing. Roblox spokesperson Roman Skuratovskiy said that the online game platform will grab visual assets from either its marketplace or your own visual asset library.

The assistant can also help with coding and answer questions about developing on the application, which could be useful tools for creators on the platform. However, it will launch either at the end of this year or early next year.

Down the line, the company has bigger visions for its Assistant, with some workers teasing that it could generate sophisticated gameplay and even make 3D models from scratch.

Roblox in more devices?

Along with the new AI feature, the company also announced that its popular social and gaming app is coming to PS4 and PS5 in October.

However, onstage at RDC, a worker heavily teased that the company will be expanding to more places: “stay tuned, because there are more platforms to come.”

The company also shared that the Meta Quest app will be “widely available” later in September. The company released an open beta of the Quest app in July, and it got over a million installs in the first five days following that launch. There are also upgrades coming to the Xbox app, including an improved user experience and the promise of frequent updates.
