What is the ‘Fireball’ Meteor Shower?
The Taurid meteor shower, or Halloween Fireball is an annual event taking place in November. According to NASA scientist Bill Cooke, “The Taurids are rich in fireballs, so if you see a Taurid it can be very brilliant and it’ll knock your eyes out…when a Taurid appears it’s usually big and bright.”
The shower is active from late September to early December but is best viewed during peak activity in mid-November. During its peak, observers can expect to see approximately six shooting stars per hour.
According to NASA, these comets travel approximately 42 Miles, 66 Kilometres, above the earth, at a speed of 17 miles (27 KM) per second, or 65,000 miles (104,000 KM) per hour. The Taurid’s meteors are relatively slow.
When is it?
The Fireball meteor shower will be visible on two days this year: November 6th at 4:47 A.M. and November 13th at 4:21 A.M. On November 13th, there is also a new moon, which means that there will be no lunar light interference, making it a perfect night to watch the stars glow.
Where can I watch it in the UAE?
Experts recommend finding an area with minimal light pollution in the UAE to fully enjoy the Fireball shower, although the celestial spectacle will be visible from anywhere. So drive out into the Dubai desert to get the full experience.
You will not require a telescope, or any other tools or preparation. All you have to do is look up and be amazed.
