Saudi Arabia‘s unwavering support for women designers is unlocking boundless opportunities on the international stage, fostering their creative expression and propelling them towards global acclaim.
With the participation of Ruba Al-Khaldi and Lujain Rafie at the fourth London Design Biennale, Saudi Arabia is poised to leave its mark on the world of design.
The event, which will take place from June 1 – June 25, 2023, will bring together the most forward-thinking and ambitious designers, curators, and design institutes from around the world.
This year’s theme is “The Global Game: Remapping Collaborations.”
Al-Khaldi and Rafie, two Saudi female designers who organized and created the “Woven” piece, will curate and present it at the biennale in the Saudi pavilion. Rafie’s expertise is in product design, interior architecture, and design research, whereas Al-Khaldi is an expert in innovation and strategic design.
Their concept is an interactive creative experience that showcases the fabric of humanity, with visitors’ visions of the future coming together to create a unique and intricate tapestry. Each thread in the fabric represents a field of development, and visitors get to choose what it represents. The fabric is inspired by Sadu art, a traditional craft that is an important element of culture and architecture in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the designs of Saudi women throughout history.
The aim is that by the time the exhibition closes on 25th June, the Saudi pavilion would have completed a 50-meter-long tapestry design inspired by the visitors’ ideas and aspirations for the future.
