ARE NOTIFICATIONS TAKING UP THE LIFE OUT OF OUR DAY?

“Notifications, if not kept at bay, can do a number on our productivity, and perhaps worse, our psyche. If you’re distracted by a message or a “like” on one of the gobs of social media networks on your phone, it can take about 25 minutes to get back on task, an informatics professor tells The Wall Street Journal. To help alleviate notification overload, the Journal suggests “quiet hours” where it’s accepted for you not to respond and turning off notifications for a chunk of time. Work for 25 minutes, then pause to check up on what you missed (if anything)”, says the Editor at LinkedIn.

Another LinkedIn user says, “Thank you for sharing Sebastian Mueller. This is so critical to understand. We’re already distracted by our more than 50,000 thoughts a day, so add to that notifications and it’s no wonder anxiety and attention deficiency is growing exponentially. It’s amazing we get anything done. I keep my phone on silent, so I can control when and how much time I spend on my phone, and even with this it’s a challenge. This helps with what I call the Pavlov’s syndrome, where our brains get wired to react to every chirp, ding and sound coming out of our phones, laptops and other electronics. If however, I’m working on something critical, or expecting an important call etc, I take it off silent mode for that period of time. We need to better manage our technology, or it will manage us. #mindfulliving

A simple hack to keep your notifications on tab is:

Step 1: Scroll to any message or group chat, press it and hold the message.
Step 2: After you select the message, a blocked-out speaker will appear at the top of the screen. Click on it.
Step 3: You will get three options: Mute notifications for eight hours, one week or one year. Select your choice and tap OK.
