Snapchat launched an AI chatbot last month and the reviews are coming in, they are not good. Users do not appreciate their private chats, this is a fact that many social media companies like Meta have been ignoring and are now facing backlash for. The recent launch of Snapchat’s “My AI Bot,” landed Snap Inc in the same boat.
Snapchat’s My AI
The My AI chat is now pinned to the top of all user inboxes in the app and enables you to chat with an AI entity and have it answer questions. The fact that the AI bot is pinned in the private chat area upset many users, as they saw it as a form of meddling with their private chats.
According to the data analysis website Sensor Tower, there has been an influx of one-star reviews since the launch of the AI bot along with written reviews complaining about the bot’s efficiency and its location in the chat. Many more users have stated that they will remove their 5-star reviews if the My AI bot is not removed to at least moved from the chat area.
Invasion Of Privacy
The fact that many Snap users use the app as their primary platform for personal interactions, embedding the AI chat on top of the private chat area feels intrusive and there’s no way to actually remove the My AI chat from the top of your inbox display.
There’s also concern about the implementation of AI into Snapchat. Many users are attracted to Snapchat because of the privacy element, therefore, there has been a lot of discussion about the amount of information that has been revealed about their location, personal details, etc.
People download messaging apps to send messages to their contacts and nothing else, therefore, adding other elements generally doesn’t work. Whether it was Facebook’s messenger bots for brands back in 2016, or Snapchat’s AI bot in 2023, messing with private chats has proven to be a no-go area for social media apps.
