What happens to Expo 2020 now that it’s over?

Keep reading to find out.

After being the world’s most popular attraction for six months, Expo 2020 Dubai has come to an end on 31 March. More than 23 million visitors, including celebrities and influencers, had the opportunity to explore the 200 futuristic pavilions and add unforgettable memories to their social media feeds. However, the question that is now on everyone’s mind is: what happens to the Expo site?

Plans are already in place to metamorphose the $8 billion fair into the country’s first 15-minute city that will offer its residents the opportunity to move around on foot or bicycle, significantly reducing the need for a vehicle. At the end of the day, who needs a car when they can access schools, shops and hospitals in just 15 minutes or even less. This vision goes hand in hand with that of Expo 2020, which primarily focused on sustainability and the well-being of the environment.

On top of that, people around the world will see the landmark’s name change into District 2020 as it transforms into a residential and business hub. In line with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan, this new and improved space will be ready to welcome up to 145,000 residents and workers as well as corporations and startups as soon as it opens its door in October 2022.

We know you’re probably still wondering if the pavilions will still be a part of the modern city. Director at the Opportunity Pavilion Anoosha Al Marzouqi answers your question by stating:

“Nearly 80% of what the Expo has built will remain in legacy. While District 2020 is the name of the Expo site, it will turn into a residential and commercial community called the ‘15-minute city’ eventually.”

The countries whose legacy pavilions will remain available include the UAE, Saudi Arabia and India while other temporary pavilions and attractions will be dismantled and taken down to clear the way for offices and residential buildings. That’s not all; visitors will also still be capable of visiting the Mobility, Sustainability and Opportunity pavilions. Yes, you can still take the world’s largest passenger lift when you pay a visit to the Alif Mobility Pavilion.

Let’s not forget about The Dubai Exhibition Center, which will continue to be the ideal location for world-class events.
