How to be a good influencer

Influencer marketing is currently on the uprise with marketers using the strategy to promote their brands, products, and services. With this in mind, more creators who have defined their niche and doing well on social media are looking to become influencers, and why not? There are, however, some points to look at into what makes a good or even ideal influencer with five ‘Be’ points.

  • Be reliable – This is the first thing agencies and brands want from an influencer. Just like applying for a job, your employer wants to know that you will be coming into the office on time, doing the work properly, and doing it to the best of your ability. Being an influencer doesn’t just mean posting anything on social media whenever you want to. There is a set schedule and plan of action that would have been made with your agencies or the brand to guide you and make sure you are working on time.
  • Be confident- We are not telling you to change your personality for this point, but to own who you are. As an influencer, approach people and tell them about yourself. The world we live in is not only digital but there are always networking events or places you can go to, to meet others and make connections.
  • Be yourself- This follows from being confident. Once you have approached others, be yourself, and know who you are and what you represent. Remember, a brand or agency that hires you is hiring you for a reason. They want to see how you represent what you represent and more about who you are so just be yourself. It is all about being authentic online and offline and if your approach online doesn’t match your offline approach then it could cost you a job.
  • Be creative- As an influencer, it’s not only the brand or agency that develops concepts but also you as the creative. If you’re passionate about what you do then it should come easily and naturally, but if it doesn’t then that’s also fine. Spend time trying to get into a creative flow and again, it’s all about knowing who you are, the content that you post, and why you are posting it. Tip: brainstorm ideas as a way of conceptualising different thought processes. Pen to paper really does help.

  • Be visible- This means posting consistently. Influencers normally post constantly whether it be on their main feed or their stories. It is important to be active as being active means being visible. There is also a double meaning to this ‘being visible’ as you can also be visible when talking to others (refer back to the second point). The Kardashians didn’t just popular from just sitting at home taking pictures on the sofa, they are actively going out, meeting people, and talking to people which is part of the reason they are a huge success.
