Twitter released the open-source code that chooses which tweets show up on your timeline. It explains the factors that go into choosing the tweets that appear in the For You timeline as well as how it ranks and filters them, which plays a huge role in a tweet going viral.
Twitter published a blog post explaining why they released the code, stating that they want their users to be able to get maximum exposure on the tweets they publish. With that being said, we’ve done the reading for you and summarized the key takeaways from Twitter’s algorithm source code that will help you get the maximum exposure for your tweets.
First, let’s start with some factors that boost engagement.
Positive Feedback
Having positive feedback on your tweet will increase your visibility. The algorithm breaks down how much each reaction boosts your tweet. Replies- 1x, Retweets- 20x and likes- 30x.
Adding Images and Videos
Twitter user (@aakashg0) figured that according to the algorithm, adding videos and images can boost your tweet by 2x. Images and videos also statistically earn more likes, which in turn will automatically give a major boost to your tweet as likes give the highest boost.
Twitter Blue
The Algorithm showed that paying the monthly fee for blue check marks can extend organic reach.
Sticking To Your Niche
Twitter’s algorithm categorizes users into clusters based on the type of content they regularly post. News organizations, Bollywood celebrities, football accounts, and so on. They are each placed in their own cluster to personalize users’ feeds based on their interests.
However, if you post content that falls outside of your designated cluster, also known as “out of network” content, it can negatively impact your reach.
Now let’s look at some factors that can negatively impact your reach.
Misspelling
Double-checking your spelling is crucial for reaching a wider audience on Twitter, as words with misspellings are considered an “unknown language”, and that will negatively impact your reach.
Negative Feedback/Bad Reputation
Negative feedback/reactions to your tweets or accounts such as mutes, blocks, unfollows, spam reports, and abuse reports can severely damage your “reputation score,” which in turn will decrease your reach.
