Bluesky-The Twitter Alternative
After Elon Musk took control of the social media app, it has recently been referred to as a potential Twitter replacement.
Although Bluesky’s beta was made available to the public in February, the platform’s notoriety increased in April as more Twitter users started posting about flocking there. As of Friday, the platform had gained the support of politicians like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and celebrities like Chrissy Teigen.
When Did Bluesky Launch?
Bluesky’s concept first surfaced at Twitter in 2019, but it was later spun off into its own nonprofit organization with support from former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey in 2022. Dorsey currently sits on the board of Bluesky. He co-founded Twitter in 2006 and stepped down as CEO in 2021. In a lengthy thread from April 2022, the platform clarified its connection to Twitter and mentioned that former Twitter software engineer Jay Graber had also been hired to assist with the platform’s launch.
Although there are many similarities between the Bluesky app and Twitter, its main distinction is that it is structured around a decentralized system. In the future, users will be able to create their own servers that they can use with communities of their choice. This means that user data can be stored on independent servers rather than ones owned by the company.
How to Join Bluesky?
Right now, begging is the most effective method of getting on Bluesky. This year, Bluesky started removing names from its waitlist and has been sending out invites in waves. Due to the difficulty in using the platform, many half-joking memes have been created by those attempting to obtain an invite code. Even more outrageous claims were made about selling Bluesky invite codes for over $190 on eBay.

Bluesky has not yet disclosed the precise date of its general public release. The platform is working to “finish pieces that we believe to be critical,” like its content moderation system, according to Graber’s March blog post.
Who’s On It?
According to analytics company Data.ai, the Bluesky app had 375,000 downloads on iOS worldwide as of Wednesday. The app was just made available for Android, but as of Friday, no data regarding Android downloads had been gathered. Journalists, online personalities, tech experts, and a few celebrities are the site’s main users. The two people with the highest public profile on the platform so far seem to be Ocasio-Cortez and Teigen.
Why has Bluesky Become So Popular?
Twitter has been experiencing numerous bugs, hiccups, and significant changes ever since Musk purchased the social media site. More people have left since Twitter recently removed legacy verification. Additionally, as Twitter becomes more chaotic, users are looking for an alternative.
Bluesky’s currently exclusive nature has also proved to be in its favor. On Sunday, the platform became a trending term on Twitter.
As there aren’t many users on the platform, conspiracy theorists don’t seem to have yet gained access to Bluesky. This could alter in the future. After putting in place a more effective moderation system, Bluesky might release the app to the public soon.
