Cheems’ battle with cancer
Cheems, or Balltze, a dog from the Shiba Inu breed from Hong Kong who had gone viral on social media, died on Friday during surgery for cancer treatment. The owner posted on the official Instagram account for the dog stated that “He fell asleep on Friday morning during his last thoracentesis surgery. Originally, we wanted to arrange chemotherapy or other possible treatment for him after this operation, but it is too late now.”
The post further added in tribute that “A Shiba Inu with a round smiling face connecting you and me, he has helped many people during the pandemic and brought a lot of joy to many of you, but now his mission has completed.”
His owner also states that fans of the dog should not be saddened by his death, but rather they should celebrate his life. The owner had also been documenting Balltze’s cancer journey on social media, and giving updates on his health before his passing.
The dog, whose nickname comes from his love for “cheemsburgers” had gone viral because of an awkward photo of the dog where he is sitting on the floor becoming an iconic meme, used to express discomfort or weakness in particular situations.
The dog is also known for the internet meme “Swole Doge vs Cheems” which features two Shiba Inu dogs. The muscular version of Doge represents something seen as better in the past, while Balltze represents its current, less desirable state, such as the one below. The meme gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Fans have taken to social media to share tributes for the beloved dog and celebrate his life just as the owner wants them to.
