X is preparing to launch a new marketplace where users can claim inactive usernames as part of the platform’s broader effort to generate new revenue streams and enhance the value of its premium subscriptions. The system will include both free handle requests for paying subscribers and paid sales of high-demand usernames.
Free Handle Requests
Subscribers to X’s Premium+ or Premium Business plans will be able to request inactive usernames without paying an additional fee. These usernames, referred to internally as “Priority handles,” may include full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations.
If approved, the new handle will replace the user’s existing one. If they later cancel or downgrade their subscription, the username will revert to their previous handle after a 30-day grace period.
Paid Marketplace for Rare Handles
Handles that are short, generic, or otherwise in high demand, referred to as “Rare handles,” will not be available through the standard request process. Instead, they will be sold directly through a paid marketplace or released in limited-time “drops.” Prices are expected to vary widely based on the name’s desirability, length, and cultural relevance. Once purchased, these handles will remain with the buyer even if they cancel their Premium subscription.

How It Works
Handle requests for free usernames will typically be reviewed within three business days. If approved, the user’s old handle will be reserved and will not be reassigned to another account. Users can also register interest in specific inactive usernames that are not yet available and will be notified if those become obtainable later.
Why It Matters
The new handle marketplace represents another step in X’s ongoing shift toward monetization through subscriptions and digital ownership. It gives the platform a new source of income while allowing users and brands to secure desirable usernames in a structured and verified way.
