You Will Soon Be Able To Download Your Instagram Data

We all know Facebook collects data on its users.

And considering Instagram is owned by Facebook, it shouldn’t come as a surprise the photo-sharing app collects data on all of its users as well.

But that’s all going to change soon.

Facebook recently announced a new plan to ensure users have control over their privacy and data. It will give members easy access in finding, downloading and deleting their data off the social network.

Instagram’s parent company, Facebook, hasn’t overlooked the photo-sharing app. 

Last week, Instagram announced it’s building its own data portability function. According to The Verge, this new tool will “…allow users to download a copy of everything they’ve ever shared on the platform, similar to how Facebook’s download your information tool works.”

Interesting.

This tool will also help Instagrammers monitor how much of their data is on the photo-sharing platform. And both Instagram and Facebook’s new data monitoring tools will help parent-company Facebook comply with the upcoming European data privacy rule, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This new regulation will require all data collected by social media platforms to be accessible and portable – and will also require businesses to delete data upon user request.

While we found downloading our data off Facebook slightly terrifying, it will be interesting to see what kinds of information Instagram has collected on us throughout the past few years…
