In November, Obama admitted in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE while looking back at his presidency and new memoir, A Promised Land, that he and Mrs. Obama faced marital struggles during his eight years as president.
“That was the truth of our time in the White House,” he said.
The father of two continued: “During the time we were there, Michelle felt this underlying tension. The pressure, stress, of needing to get everything right, to be ‘on’ at every moment. There were times where I think she was frustrated or sad or angry but knew that I had Afghanistan or the financial crisis to worry about, so she would tamp it down.”
But the couple eventually managed to revive their unconditional love once their dutiful job in Washington D.C. was done.
“It was like a big exhale right after we left office,” he said. “It took some time to talk about how she had felt. Once [the presidency] was done, there was possibility of her opening up … but more importantly just her being able to let out a breath and relax.”

Mrs. Obama also became “more relaxed and more joyful since we left office,” her husband said, adding, “That allowed us to just enjoy the deep love that comes with a marriage this long.”
Later on Sunday, Obama posted her thanks for all the birthday wishes: “Thank you all for the lovely birthday wishes! I know this past year has been difficult for us all on so many levels, so I just hope you all are taking care of yourselves and finding joy in the smallest moments. Love you all.”
