Why UAE residents need to watch what they say about Qatar on social media

In light of the recent high-profile disputes with Qatar among a number of Gulf nations,  The UAE’s General Prosecutor Hamad Saif Al-Shamsi has warned UAE residents against posting any messages deemed sympathetic to Qatar as it may land them a fine of AED500,000 and up to 15 years in prison. 

According to Al Arabiya news, Shamsi said the decision has been made in response to Qatar’s aggressive and irresponsible policies in the region…

So, if a lot of you active social media types out there have waded into some heated debates on your Facebook or Twitter feed surrounding this recent domestic crisis, we’d advise a fair amount of caution going forward…

Best to steer clear of those cybercrime waters and stick to sharing those #Covefe memes for now…
