Aside from JLo breaking the internet (again) in ‘that’ dress, a supermodel line up at Max Mara and a conveyor belt to give models a much needed break at Gucci, Milan Fashion Week had so much more to offer.
We have compiled a list of the top five Milanese fashion designers you should be following on Instagram.
Elisabetta Franchi (@elisabettafranchi)
Elisabetta Franchi spent her whole summer on a boat and after witnessing her SS20 it’s clear this is where she drew her inspiration for this collection. Although sailor inspired models dressed in certain looks were dressed more for yacht parties or disembarking ship into St Tropez; dramatic ruffled sleeves and excesses of sequins and embellishment were the basis of these looks.
A palette of pastels ranging from turquoise to pink amongst a classic white shirt had a wearable appeal perfect for sunshine weather. One-piece swimming costumes were vibrant and 50’s reminiscent, garments were accessorised with sailor hats and oversized earrings were key accessories with each look making the collection nautical yet feminine.
Marni (@marni)
Colliding with the Global Climate Strike designers have either opted to avoid this topic or completely embrace it. Francesco Risso of Marni striked in his own way. A collection designed from repurposed fabrics, made from recylec bottles and other designs were taken from the Marni archives so the fabric was res-used and floor length gowns featuring overlays resemblant of fish nets told their own story.
Drawing inspiration from the Amazon fires Marni’s collection featured a tropical carnival vibe, colourful brush strokes slashed across garments and eccentric headpieces paid tribute to the disaster in Brazil. Oversized bags were also a major talking point from the collection and are an accessory we have been hoping would come back in style again.
Etro (@Etro)
Free-spirited and sophisticated, the two styles colide at Etro’s SS20 collection. Barefoot models graced the catwalk in a hippie meets haute couture blend of looks. Once again the classic white shirt featured yet was reinvented with layers, tailoring, fringes and brocade.
Pirate boots and gladiator sandals made made an appearance. The runway was awash with a bohemian aesthetic; boleros, vests, kimonos, floaty dresses and maxi skirts. Making this an easy to wear yet impactful pieces to have as part of your SS20 wardrobe.
Moschino (@moschino)
Moschino pushed the boundaries of art for the SS20 collection, inspired by Picasso, one model was sent down the runway dressed as a painting. Models hair was painted and certain looks were resemblant of comic book style sketchers, a few models wore violin, viola and mandarin shaped dresses, this runway was wacky and wonderful.
Abundant with skirts and bucket bags there was also a Spanish influence running throughout the collection; matador inspired bolero dresses, an iconic polkadot flamenco gown and super-sized structured shoulders. This collection was in-fact a work of art.
Ermanno Scervino (@ermannoscervino)
A collection that is an ode to ‘Italian-ness’, Ermanno Scervino’s SS20 runway involved polka-dots and pinstripes and bright shades. Fabrics were playful and included hot pink organza, pleated lace, ruffled leather and for a dose of sensuality transparent fabrics.
Sequinned sweaters and full skirts, satin slips and dressing robes, white tailoring was predominant. Craftsmanship and creativity have allowed Ermanno Scervino to showcase a modern wardrobe that exuberates femininity; daywear features as night wear and nightwear becomes evening wear.
