You’ve probably read or heard about Elon Musk’s $44 billion deal with Twitter, which has now led the company to become privately held. While some rejoiced at his victory, English actress Jameela Jamil was obviously not happy with the latest changes.
On Monday, the presenter took it to Twitter to reveal she will no longer be active on the platform by tweeting her explanation, one last time:
Ah he got twitter. I would like this to be my what lies here as my last tweet. Just really *any* excuse to show pics of Barold. I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck.
With 1 million followers, Jameela had previously used the platform to support important matters such as body positivity and mental health; however, she no longer believes that she can continue to do so after the acquisition. This is mostly due to the fact that she does not believe in Musk’s ‘free speech’ ideology or his future plans for the application.
Nonetheless, The Good Place star isn’t the only one who saw major drawbacks in Musk’s game plan; The New York Times shared their opinion on the matter calling the ‘new’ Twitter a scary place while Time Magazine discussed Twitter employees’ concerns when it comes to Musk’s ownership.
In spite of not being the only one to speak up her mind, the public figure received some serious backlash, which according to her came mostly from men; this pushed her to post the following comic post to implicitly call out all the haters that attacked her decision.
If Twitter does adopt the entrepreneur’s idea of free speech, then provoking responses such as these would go unattended and no action would be taken against the user that is provoking or harassing others individuals on the social platform.
