Unfolding Apple’s newest addition to the Mac family
As October unfolds, the tech world is on the edge of its seat, waiting for Apple’s October Surprise. So far, it’s been an enigmatic month with only a perplexing Apple Pencil announcement, despite earlier rumors of new iMacs and iPads.
However, it appears that the month is about to get a lot more exciting, as Mark Gurman, known for his spot-on Apple predictions, believes that the much-anticipated 24-inch iMac is on its way, and it might arrive sooner than we think.
Mark Gurman predicts
In his recent ‘Power On’ newsletter for Bloomberg, Gurman hints that the new 24-inch iMac could be hitting the shelves as early as October 30th. If this prediction holds, it would mark the end of a nearly 900-day drought since the launch of the M1 iMac in the first half of 2021. Gurman, however, hasn’t revealed the exact chip that will power this new iMac, but he has previously suggested that it might feature the M3 chip, breaking the M1 naming convention.
Apple enthusiasts and investors are taking notice as Gurman provides more than just speculation. He claims to have been “told that Apple is planning a Mac-centered product launch around the end of this month”.
Furthermore, it’s not just the iMac; configurations of the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the higher-end Pro models show shipping delays until November. Gurman connects these dots, considering them a “clear sign” that something significant is brewing in Cupertino.
Apples long wait for upgrades
This move is reminiscent of Apple’s strategy in the past. Last time they delayed their earnings announcement until after October, they had a substantial Mac and iPad unveiling. Could history be repeating itself? The tech world certainly hopes so.
While the 14- and 16-inch Pro laptops received a refresh in January, the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the iMac have remained unchanged for quite some time. The iMac, in particular, is closing in on its third year with the same chip, making an upgrade long overdue. Gurman’s insider knowledge hints at potential improvements to displays for the new Macs, but don’t expect any radical design changes. The significant updates may be saved for future models.
In his newsletter, Gurman also responded to a reader’s question about the future of MacBooks. He doesn’t foresee significant changes beyond internal upgrades and minor display improvements.
Instead, he predicts that the next significant change will come in the form of an iMac Pro in 2025, followed by OLED MacBook Pros in 2026. These new MacBook Pros could bring not only updated designs but also new features, perhaps even introducing touchscreens to Apple’s lineup.

With Apple’s October event seemingly just around the corner, the excitement among Apple enthusiasts and the tech community is palpable. The new 24-inch iMac, whenever it arrives, is expected to be a significant step forward in performance, design, and technology. Mark your calendars and prepare for Apple’s October Surprise, as the tech giant once again reshapes the landscape of personal computing.
