Future of Generative-AI: Why experts call for a Regulation

Existing laws fail to specify direct liability of the content produced making Generative-AI a big threat

Generative AI

We are at the peak of the AI revolution, as we witness Generative-AI tools collaborate with various ad creation platforms, and continue to create AI-generated images, AI-generated music tracks, and whatnot. A lot of businesses, startups, and even governments are integrating AI into their operations to make the most of it.

While there is an expanded use of Generative-AI in a more general context, one question remains of utmost significance as to how the legal copyright over the usage of generative content work. Technically, the content was non-existent before the user typed in their prompt, so the ‘Creator’ in a legal context would be the person who entered the query.

Brands, startups, and individuals are using Generative-AI in any way they choose, with no regulations in place the content generated has no limitations as to the factual accuracy and accountability of the content. Therefore, as it stands right now, the issue looms over everything generated by the AI tool.

What do ‘Creators’ of Generative-AI think?

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, agrees with lawmakers that government oversight will be critical to mitigating the risks of generative AI. CEO Sam Altman testified before Congress on May 16, asking government regulators to interfere and regulate AI technology to set some limits on the powerful Generative-AI tool in the future.

“As this technology advances we understand that people are anxious about how it could change the way we live. We are too,” Altman agreed in a Senate Committee. “If this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong,” he said, claiming it could do “significant harm to the world.”

OpenAI has two fundamentals to make the governance of Generative-AI technology possible:

  • A belief that it’s going to lead to a much better world
    • ChatGPT creators believe Generative -AI can assist in education, creative fields, and personal productivity.
    • Technology can improve society and help in economic growth.
  • A belief that it’s unintuitively risky
    • Difficult to stop the creation of superintelligence.
    • Need for a global surveillance regime.

A Strategy for AI Regulation

Artificial Intelligence is the latest high-tech marvel to dazzle lawmakers and some experts are worrying that the eager industry leaders are just downsizing the risks. Putting the benefits aside, there is also a downside of all the misinformation and misunderstanding that is also being sparked by the content generated by AI tools.

According to the creators of ChatGPT, “In terms of both potential upsides and downsides, superintelligence will be more powerful than other technologies humanity has had to contend with in the past. We can have a dramatically more prosperous future, but we have to manage risk to get there.”

Experts think that it is crucial to mitigate the risks of today’s AI technology because superintelligence will require special treatment and coordination. The initial strategy that they outline is :

  • Coordination among the leading developments
    • To balance safety and smooth integration of AI systems into operations and society
    • Coordination from the governments
    • Individuals and companies should act responsibly
  • A pause on further AI development is imperative
    • A need for an authority to set guidelines like IAEA
    • Tracking computing and energy usage
  • Technical expertise to make AI safe
