Are you clicking onto social media and just seeing short-form video content? It is because humans now have a short attention span and enjoy watching something more visual rather than just viewing a post?
Short-form video content is becoming more and more popular as time goes on. New features on social media are being added to make short-form video content better than what it already is, and many people are consumed by the videos they are watching.
TikTok is the platform that sparked the enormous interest in video content. The social media channel which launched during the pandemic saw a large amount of people downloading the app. TikTok was announced on numerous sources as the number one popular app and downloaded app during covid-19.
How is this relevant to us now in 2022?
Because of TikTok, Instagram introduced Instagram Reels, and YouTube introduced YouTube Shorts. What was once a platform to post your images and videos on, is now a place to watch short-form videos – is that a bad thing? No, we didn’t say it was a bad thing, but it does make it a little destructive for what the purpose of Instagram or YouTube is or was.

We download different social media apps because each of them has their own distinct feature. It seems as though all of them are now blending together and becoming the same thing. I don’t want to be going onto my Instagram and seeing millions of Reels popping up on my page, that’s what I downloaded TikTok for.
YouTube is a great way for people to watch long-form content like interviews, shows, how to videos and guides. It is a place where people of every age can find something to watch and learn. Even my grandparents use YouTube to find out new things like new homemade remedies for their joints, or how to get the best out of your superfoods. TikTok isn’t something they would use to find out this information, but YouTube is that perfect source for them as its simple, easy and accessible on mobile and desktop. With people now turning to 15-second or 1-minute YouTube Shorts, it has not only disturbed what YouTube is there for, but potentially created a change in the audience.
