Why is it celebrated?

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality. 

When is it celebrated?

Marked annually on the 8th of March.

Theme of the year

The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Action is needed to level the playing field.

Do we still need an International Women’s Day?

Yes! There’s no place for complacency. According to the World Economic Forum, sadly none of us will see gender parity in our lifetimes, and nor likely will many of our children. Gender parity will not be attained for almost a century. 

There’s urgent work to do – and we can all play a part.

IWD’s social importance

The internet has played a huge part in spreading the crucial message of International Women’s Day. On the widest photo-sharing platform and social media giant – Instagram, #internationalwomensday is a hashtag with 8,718,485 posts on it. It features a variety of quotes related to the cause, many pictures of women sharing their real-life experiences, and empowering call to action posts. @internationalwomensday_global has over 42 Thousand followers that celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
