Christopher Nolan’s most recent directorial venture, Oppenheimer, has reached a total gross of $430 million in the global box office in just two weeks.
Critics and fans of the film have compared the movie to David Fincher’s The Social Network. Like Nolan’s Oppenheimer, The Social Network is a biographical motion picture. The film follows the founder of the social networking website Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, who is played by Jesse Eisenberg.
Besides the obvious comparisons that both films are biopics based on real people, or that both screenplays have been adapted from novels, there are several other intriguing similarities between Oppenheimer and The Social Network.
Despite their different subjects, both movies touch upon certain common themes. Oppenheimer might delve into themes of science, and the consequences of technological advancements, but at its heart explores betrayal, which is a theme The Social Network discusses at length. Fincher’s biopic on Zuckerberg also goes into depth regarding ambition and friendship.
Upon its release, The Social Network was met with high acclaim and received multiple award nominations and wins, including three Academy Awards. If Oppenheimer’s impressive box office success continues, it is on track for a similar triumph.
The Social Network is currently streaming on Netflix.
