Saudi Arabia has launched a platform called, “Mawthooq,” to provide licenses/permits for influencers and creators who are looking to earn revenue through social media advertisements.
Each permit costs approximately SAR15,000 (roughly $4,000), with three-year validity. It will be issued to both Saudi and non-Saudi influencers.
However, for advertising agencies who represent non-Saudi influencers are required to obtain an investment license from the Saudi Ministry of Investment.
The General Commission for Audiovisual Media (GCAM), the organization in charge of Mawthooq, states that when getting a license, influencers will also be expected to adhere to certain conditions. This entails adhering to the commission’s rules, as well as any age and content limitations, and being able to supply information upon request.
Social media has seen a growth in both registered users and influencer investments since the late 2000s. Nearly 60% of the global population are now active users of social media, and many of them use these platforms to look for things to purchase, according to Smart Insights.
As of 2023, in Saudi Arabia, 28.81 million people—or 79.30% of the population—use social media with 65.8% men dominating social media advertising profile.
