Amidst the COVID-19 lockdowns, Zoom has seen an increase in usage on its platform due to the fact that it’s a multi-participant video meeting app. From teachers to celebrities are using the platform in order to connect with their audience as it helps users with maintaining some sort of social engagement, according to Social Media Today.
Initially, Zoom was founded back in 2011, however, its main use case was as an enterprise video. However, the platform’s simply functionality has found itself a hit amongst those looking for face-to-face meeting time; especially for those who want to go live for up to 40 minutes with 100 participants maximum. Thus, making it a “great solution to address a sudden need in the market”, according to Social Media Today.
Amidst the COVID-19 lockdowns, there has been an increase in demand for this application.
Zoom was the most downloaded iOS business application in 141 markets in March, according to the lastest report from App Annie. Zoom has gone from 10 million DAU in December to 200 million MAU right now, says Zoom according to Social Media Today.
The company has been “forced” to re-focus its use-case due to its rising demand; however, it has also exposed a few flaws in Zoom’s systems which has lead to the FBI warning users regarding potential risks and exposure to outside elements while being in a Zoom meeting, according to Social Media Today.
With the acknolwedgment of these flaws, Zoom has vowed to commit all its efforts towards the improvements of its systems in order to protect user security while also working to cater towards the massive increase in meetings, according to Social Media Today.
“These new use cases have helped us uncover unforeseen issues with our platform. Dedicated journalists and security researchers have also helped to identify pre-existing ones,” Zoom says. “We appreciate the scrutiny and questions we have been getting – about how the service works, about our infrastructure and capacity, and about our privacy and security policies. These are the questions that will make Zoom better, both as a company and for all its users.”
Amongst the varying issues, Zoom has officially removed the Facebook SDK from its iOS app due to the fact that users were concerned about unknowingly sharing information with Facebook. In addition to this, Zoom has also removed its integration with LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator, which basically shared LinkedIn profile information on Zoom participants within the application, according to Social Media Today.
“Over the next 90 days, we are committed to dedicating the resources needed to better identify, address, and fix issues proactively. We are also committed to being transparent throughout this process,” Zoom says, highlighting that there will be more security measures taken.Â
The COVID-19 lockdowns would be a key turning point for Zoom as it could become a key resource for many more people in the future, according to Social Media Today.
