And there we have it. Just about five years ago, Ellen DeGeneres famous 2014 Oscars selfie has finally been overthrown as the most reposted Tweet of all time.
Its successor? A post about chicken nuggets.
Unaware he was about to make social media history Carter Wilkerson, a 16-year-old from Nevada, USA cheekily tweeted fast food chain Wendy’s – amiably asking how many retweets he’d need to receive a year’s free supply of chicken nuggets.Â
Wendy’s replied instantly with what must have been, at the time, a purely arbitrary figure of ’18 million’.Â
Not one to be dissuaded, Wilkerson tweeted the below post, which has so far been met with 3.5 million retweets, eclipsing DeGeneres’ previous record of 3.4 million.

Â
While the teen still has quite a way to go to hit Wendy’s agreed target, the chain has (very sportingly) already offered to supply him with a year’s worth of nuggets for his efforts so far, as well as donating $100,000 to charity. That’s some good PR for you.Â
What about 2018’s Most Retweeted Tweet?
It belongs to South Korean Pop group BTS, who decided to bust out their own version of the #kikichallenge last July.Â

According to cnet.com “the Korean pop group wasn’t only the most tweeted about in 2018. It surpassed former President Barack Obama for the most-liked tweet. The group also topped the lists for most tweeted about musicians and celebrities.”Â
