TikTok moves into gaming with the launch of new ‘mini-games’ in Vietnam

Is TikTok on its way to becoming the ultimate gaming platform? Only time will tell.

As each year goes by, gaming is slowly but surely becoming a pillar in the modern online culture, which makes it only reasonable for one of the world’s fastest-growing social media platforms such as TikTok to tap into this industry and attempt to expand its range of activities and provide an enticing experience for its younger audiences.

While the short-video platform already offers game streaming options like for example TikTok Live Studio, Reuters has revealed that the fast-growing application is launching in-app mini-games, which could very likely lead to an increase in user engagement. From their exclusive talk with a TikTok representative, we now know that TikTok is testing the new gaming features on its app in Vietnam before rolling out the changes for everyone around the world.

When asked about the motives behind this push towards gaming, the representative also told Reuters:

“We’re always looking at ways to enrich our platform and regularly test new features and integrations that bring value to our community.”

The games that are being tested are simple, HTML5-based games, which are being designed by ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company. This company has been dabbling in the gaming field for quite some time now and is now working with TikTok to explore new revenue streams and also give the popular platform to explore the revenue potential it has through ads, sponsored games, etc.

If and when these new features pass the testing phase, they are expected to maximize engagement on the platform as it will also offer users and brands new opportunities; the former will have the chance to interact with a global audience through a fun activity while the latter can benefit from built-in ads and in-app purchases.

We’ll keep you updated as to when these ‘mini-games’ will become available globally and we’ll be waiting to see if social sharing will play a role in boosting interaction between the users who will play together.
