Twitter is Cracking Down On ‘Bots

Twitter is finally doing something about its ‘bot problem.

According to TechCrunch, the micro-blogging platform has announced changes to its API in hopes that it will massively reduce the impact of services that allow links and content to be shared across multiple accounts (i.e. the software that powers Twitter bots).

No more batch tweets, retweets, likes and mass following of users by automated platforms.

Twitter plans to continue to allow third party software to post on behalf of users, but plans on limiting abilities to a single account.

Therefore, “coordinated actions across multiple accounts” will be tougher to perform going forward.

“These changes are an important step in ensuring we stay ahead of malicious activity targeting the crucial conversations taking place on Twitter — including elections in the United States and around the world,” Twitter’s Head of API Policy & Product Trust said in a recent blog post.

Twitter announced that it would implementing changes this past January, so users should have seen this one coming.

Either way, it means there will be room for authentic tweets (and influencers) to shine and more room for brands to showcase their content.
