As social media platforms are dogfighting closely for creator monetization and luring talent to earn more by offering lucrative revenue-sharing models, YouTube has successfully entered the battle with a bang. By bringing an update on its YouTube Partner Program, to help creators earn more money.
On June 13, the Vice President of Creator Products at YouTube, Amjad Hanif announced that they are lowering the eligibility criteria for access to YPP. With the update, now you can start earning on YouTube sooner by opening up access to Fan Funding features like channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, and more.
There is also an update to YouTube’s Shopping Affiliate Program for creators bringing new talent along the journey, and making it more sustainable for content creators.
BIG NEWS!! 🎉 you can now unlock earlier access to YPP fan funding & more with fewer subs, Shorts views, and content watch hours 💚
— YouTube Creators (@YouTubeCreators) June 13, 2023
According to YouTube officials:
“Starting today, eligible creators will begin to be able to apply to YPP earlier – once they’ve met a threshold of 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3000 watch hours in the past year or 3M Shorts views in the last 90 days. These new partners will unlock access to fan funding features like channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and the ability to promote their own products with YouTube Shopping.”
What’s the early access and how will it work for YouTube Creators?
As the battle for gaining creator loyalty is at its peak, various social media giants are making efforts to keep the talent on their platforms for example Twitch has implemented new restrictions on creator monetization, and Twitter has also announced its new income-sharing pathway from tweets past week. It’s a smart move by YouTube, which could reap big benefits in the near future.
The early access and lowered eligibility criteria represent a significant difference, till now Creators were required to have 1,000 subscribers, and either 4,000 watch hours in the previous year or at least 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days. The limits have been reduced to 500 subscribers, 3,000 watch hours, or at least 3 Million Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Although the new process doesn’t unlock all revenue-generation options for Creators, because the ad revenue will be shared with those who meet the current requirements. But the improved eligibility threshold will make it easier for more creators to get started, and explore on YouTube even if they haven’t established an audience in the app yet.
With YouTube Shorts and its constant push to maintain its position as the online video leader, more users will flock from other social media platforms to engage on YouTube Shorts driving user engagement in the long run.
As creators are continuing to grow their channel, they’ll automatically become eligible to earn revenue sharing from ads and even more benefits once they reach the existing YPP eligibility criteria, without having to go through the full YPP application process again.
YouTube’s new level of YPP for creators will be rolled out in the US, UK, Canada, Taiwan, and South Korea, and will be introducing earlier access to YPP across all the countries having it over a period of time.
Supporting creators with Fan Funding features
As the ‘Creators Community’ is growing on YouTube, its Fan Funding features are giving another pathway to grow their income while being constantly engaged with their audience. Creators from across the globe, use these features to provide exclusive digital content and benefits to their fans through channel memberships or shoutout viewers who use Super Chat during their live streams.
According to data generated by YouTube, in the US, the number of channels that earned a majority of revenue from Fan Funding products in December 2022 saw an increase of over 20% compared to the prior year.
YouTube’s Shopping affiliate program
YouTube also announced that for Creators, “We’re expanding our YouTube Shopping affiliate program to all eligible US-based creators who are in YPP with over 20,000 subscribers. The affiliate program allows creators to feature products from other brands and creators in their content and be eligible for competitive commission rates on the sales of products tagged in their videos and Shorts.”
By partnering with over 50 brands like Sephora, Ulta Beauty, Nordstrom, and Wayfair spanning beauty, tech, home, and apparel; YouTube will now have these products which will be featured and tagged on videos and Shorts.
Tagging the product in videos or Shorts means that it will allow viewers to easily shop and the person tagging can earn commission from sales generated on that content. Isn’t this a win-win for both viewers and creators?
