What is skin flooding?
In order to lock in moisture and make skin appear softer and smoother, skin flooding is simply applying many skincare products on damp skin.
Dr. Charlotte Woodward, co-founder of River Aesthetics clinics and the new brand Skin Bureaux, says, “It’s the newest buzzword, but it simply involves layering serums and creams to ‘flood’ the skin with hydration, increase the efficacy and absorption of products, and protect the skin barrier.”
Skin flooding involves four simple steps: cleansing the skin, spritzing on a mist, applying serums, then moisturizing the skin.
Step 1: Cleansing
Although serums and misting would seem to be the main focus, cleaning the skin is actually the most important step in skin flooding.
“It’s really important to make sure that skin is thoroughly cleansed prior to skin flooding,” Eleni says.
Layering cosmetics on unclean skin is the last thing you want to do because it will result in a build-up of sweat, oil, and filth that will become trapped.
This could jeopardize the skin’s health because skincare products won’t absorb correctly and makeup won’t apply smoothly.
Step 2: Spritzing
Spritzing your face with any form of facial mist ensures your face remains damp throughout the process which would then help the rest of the products absorb into your skin a lot better.
It is recommended to use a facial mist between each serum applied to continue having a damp face through-out.
Step 3: Serums
After cleansing, apply the first layer of serum while the face is still damp.
The way you apply items might have an impact on how well they absorb. Dr. Ahmed El Muntasar, an expert in aesthetics, advises “you should always start with products with a thinner consistency and finish with the thickest consistency.”
A technique for skin flooding is to focus on particular regions. Eleni says, “You should apply more product there if your cheeks and under your eyes are particularly dry.”
Step 4: Moisturizer
Skin flooding can be used by all skin types but because it focuses on boosting hydration, it’s a skincare technique designed for dry or dehydrated complexions, with El Muntasar stating that it’s “really good for menopausal skin or skin struggling in the winter”. Meaning moisturizer is essentially a key element when it comes to skin flooding.
A technique for skin flooding is to focus on particular regions. Eleni says, “You should apply more product there if your cheeks and under your eyes are particularly dry.”
“On the other hand, if your T-zone is more combination, you might want to use additional mattifying products after layering a serum.”
Furthermore, timing can be crucial. According to Woodwar, “skin flooding at night can help restore plump and radiant skin by morning because our skin loses the most moisture while we sleep.”
