In 2007 Pixar served a masterpiece to the table with Ratatouille, based on Remy, the rat who aspires to be a chef, in a profession that views him as a pest. Remy unwilling ends up in the charming and quaint city of Paris as he assists Linguini, the garbage boy, in creating flavorsome dishes under the chefs’ hat at the legendary Gusteau’s.
This rather unusual and comical tale was well received in 2007. However, as the musical theatre doors closed in 2020, Tik Tok users stormed up an appetizing delight with an impromptu challenge devising a Ratatouille musical. As singers, artists, writers, costume designers, production assistants, you name it, all joined together and improvised the musical at home.
Emily Jacobsen, who lit the inauguratory flame, comically posted the video as a joke after a Disney trip was canceled during the pandemic. She shared a love ballad in a high-pitched strained voice praising Remy. Things then escalated quickly as she garnered 50 million views and others started to join in.Â
@e_jaccs A love ballad #remy #rat #ratatoille #disney #wdw #disneyworld #ratlove #ratlife #rats #Alphets #StanleyCup #CanYouWorkIt
The act carries on as different users across Tik Tok while recreating the musical embodies its free spirit exploring various avenues and retelling the story in their creative way. Remy’s voice actor, Patton Oswalt, even gave a shout to the movie creator, Brad Bird, to notice the trend as he said, “My…God…
@BradBirdA113 have you SEEN this?!?!?”

Before it reached Patton Oswalt, Popular Tik Tok star and Kombucha girl Brittany Broski further pushed into the limelight, sharing Emily’s audio on her platform. But the reason it surged in popularity is due to theatre fanatic Daniel Mertzlufft, who released Emily’s track with a spin on it with added vocals, and the rest is history.

This then proceeds to the introduction of the formidable food critic Anton Ego who finds out about Gusteau’s return in a musical piece by Liv Pearsall in the Villain song.

Although received as a rather unusual turn of events, this challenge was highly successful and approved by everyone. It shows a fun perspective of how Gen-Z banded together during the pandemic to display their mutual appreciation for Pixar’s Ratatouille. Here is a short compilation video of the musical so far if you would like to watch all the acts and discover more.
